What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a government funded qualification aimed at people over the age of 16, which is delivered whilst working. Apprenticeships allow juniors to train on the job, learning a new skill and earn a wage.
An apprentice must be employed for at least 30 hours with 20% of this time dedicated to off the job training.
Employers are committed to paying the apprentice £4.15 per hour. If the apprentice it 19+ then after 1 year on the apprenticeship this goes up to national minimum wage.
An apprentice under the age of 18 is not allowed of work more than 40 hours per week.
Why should I hire an apprentice?
An apprentice is a valuable asset to your salon. During the time in your salon, with the help of a mentor, not only does the salon become more productive but the apprentice brings another dimension of customer service.
The course is covered by the Government plus an Employer Incentive of £1000 is paid out if the apprentice is aged 16-18 at the time of enrolment.
There is £2000 available for apprentices aged between 16- 24 and £1500 for apprentices aged 25 and over

Frequently asked questions
What are the costs involved?
If you employ an apprentice aged 16-18 you don’t have to pay a penny towards their training. You will also be entitled to a Government incentive payment of £1000. For apprentices aged 19+, you will be required to pay a 5% contribution. We work with you to ensure this cost is manageable.
How long do apprenticeships last?
This depends on the apprentice. They take a minimum of 15 months, but will more likely be 17-19 months. The harder your apprentice works, the faster they can achieve their apprenticeship. At the start of the apprenticeship we will work with you and your apprentice to agree a training plan and timescales for achievement.
How do I pay an apprentice?
Your apprentice will be entitled to the national apprenticeship wage if they are between the ages of 16 and 19 years old. If they are 19 or over you can pay them an apprentice wage for the first year of their apprenticeship.
How many hours would an apprentice work?
Your apprentices will be required to work a minimum of 30 hours per week. However, if your apprentice is under 18 years old, they are not permitted to work more than 40 hours per week, or more than 8 hours per day. As an employer you must dedicate 20% of their working hours to training, so if they work 30 hours per week, this would be 6 hours in training.
